Hello. Today I am going to tell you story about Vat Savitri vrat, last week it was celebrated by marriage women in many parts of north India. There is a famous Savitri- Satyawan story, however I will be telling you a folktale from mithila region of north bihar which is mostly told to newly wed brides on the occasion of their first Vat Savitri Vrat.
Let's start it then, long ago, there was a village, where lived a brahmin couple with no other relatives. Then used to be open kitchen back in those days, beside her earthen stove, there was a snake burrow. Every morning while cooking brahmini used to pour hot rice water into the burrow, which led to the death of hatchling snakes, enraged snake couple decided to kill all their progeny as revenge.
When the brahmini gave birth to her first child, they were unaware of snakes' revenge vow, she put the baby in courtyard and engaged in household chores, the snake came and killed the baby with its poisonous sting. The Brahman couple could not understand what had happened, but this continued till the snakes killed their six children. When finally their seventh child was born, they decided not to keep the baby to themselves but give him to neighbors for daycare, and that too randomized, so that the snake couple couldn't get trace of him. This actually worked, and snake could not figureout where the child was kept, furiously, they decided to kill the couple as the act of final vengeance. The boy was left unparented, so villagers settled on bringing him up collectively, as the boy was growing up, they started burdening him with obligations and made him do works for them, in discontentment, he determined to make his way out of his homeland and get living somewhere else.
In conurbation, he met a moneylender and ask for job in exchange for shelter, and started living with him. He was laborious, honest and trustworthy thus, the sahukar treated him like his own son. The boy grew up into a man and opted to go back his birth land. On farewell, moneylender gave him money, gifts and well wishes for future.
On the way to home, he followed strange trend, wore shoes while going into water and walk bare foot on land, opened umbrella in shade and pull off in sun. Savitri along with her friends, watching him in keen interest, started making fun of him, but that led her to deep thoughts and stopped them and praised his wisdom. She explained as, while on land, everything could be seen unlike under water and under tree many creatures take rest and could be perilous in contrary to open environment. Her friends suggested, why didn't she marry him if he was so smart. She replied, she won't mind, but couldn't ask his hand, that was improper for her to do so, as she was a girl and her parents were there to decide about her marriage. Her friends asked the boy, and convinced her parents, thus Savitri was married to him.
After completion of the ceremony, the boy asked Savitri's parents for permission to leave. As Vat Savitri vrat was approaching, they showed concern, he didn't have any family, how she would be able to conduct the vrat. The boy consoled and asked to arrange everything necessary for the occasion and he would manage everything else. They agreed and Savitri left with her husband.
While on the way, the day came, she followed customes and sat under banyan tree to perform her Vrat rituals. At the mean time, the same snake couple were roaming around and spotted by nearby villagers, they intended to kill, they were chased by group of people. To save their life, they escaped and found shelter in ewer of Savitri. When the clan approached her and enquired about the snake couple, she denied and led them off.
When convinced about their safety, the couple tried to come out of the pot, but its mouth was closed tightly under her ham. They struggled, but could not make it, then stared pleading Savitri to let them go. Savitri was ready for it, put her conditions before them. She asked them to resurrect parents and brothers of her husband. They didn't have choice, they did as her desire, and as promised she released her thigh and let them go.
Soon enough six grown up men came on horses with their parents, they were delighted to see each other and headed to their native country. Arrived seven young men mounted on seven horses and a palanquin carrying Savitri into it, the villagers questioned their identity, after knowing the whole incident welcomed them warmly. And they lived happily ever after.
This story ends here. Hope you enjoyed it, let me know in comments.
