Introduction: Ardhanarishvara

Shiva and parvati as Ardhanarishvara

Let's start with today's story, the one depicted in my profile picture, The Ardhanarishvara, a composite androgynous form of Shiva and Parvati, which bring fertility and connection to all living things. Lord Shiva, primordial destroyer of evil, slayer of demons, protector, and omniscient observer of the universe, Devi Parvati, the agent of energy, growth, and transformation on Earth. The union between them is a glorious one, maintain the equilibrium between thought and action, on which the well being of the world depend.

There are many legends that explain the sacred union taken from many Puranas, but here I am going to tell you about the one I heard from my granny. It goes on as, once the gods and sages had gathered at Shiva's abode, they prayed their respects to Shiva and Parvati, however, sage Bhringi vowed to worship only Shiva, and ignored Parvati while worshiping and circumambulating him, on this Shiv and Parvati united, thereby compelling Bhringi to worship her as well as him, but the sage assumed the form of beetle and circumambulating only Shiva, drilling a hole in the deity. 

Parvati smiled knowingly, she knew, she had to prove the importance of her once and for all. She withdrew the female component from the sage, and what left was ash. The sage realized his mistake and started pleading for forgiveness, the compassionate Parvati blessed him and restore his body form and health.

Shiva and Parvati took new avatar of Ardhanarishvara, and gave the world lesson of importance of gender equality, for equilibrium of the Earth.
